Aspiring young filmmakers will learn about the craft in a weeklong film camp planned for spring break week at the East Side Library.
The library received a grant from the H. Dale and Lois Bright Foundation to offer the program to teens ages 13 to 18. The classes will be from 1 to 5 p.m. March 19-23. The event is free.
The theme is “Bright Stars Over Des Moines,” and teens will be asked to produce three- to four-minute films celebrating the best highlights of the city.
Those participating will get some filmmaking expertise from young local film producers Kristopher Debolt, owner of Digital Matters Productions, and Shekinah Young, communications specialist for the city of Des Moines.
Carolyn Greufe, manager of the East Side Library, said the camp is open to kids who live anywhere in Des Moines, but it is limited to only 24 participants.
This is the first time the library has hosted an activity like this, she said.
“We got some grant money, and we wanted to do something splashy,” Greufe said. “At the end, we’ll have a little premier and we hope to have a red carpet event.
“We’re excited; we’re hoping it will be a big draw.”
Kids attending the camp will be split into six teams, and each group will produce a video using flip phones on loan from the library. They will learn how to write a script and how to produce a professional video.
The library is planning a special event at 5 p.m. March 23 when the public may view the videos.
Greufe has invited three judges to select a winner.
“I’m hoping the kids will think of some really interesting things,” Greufe said, “like the (Pappajohn) sculpture park and Gray’s Lake. We’ll offer suggestions, but I think they’ll come up with some pretty cool ideas.”
Anyone interested in registering must do so by March 16 by emailing cegreufe@dmpl.org.
