BHUBANESWAR: Short and documentary films have not lost their sheen in this age of hi-tech commercial movies. It was evident at the 6th edition of the National Short and Documentary Film Festival with the audience remaining glued to their seats at IDCOL auditorium here on Wednesday.

Governor M C Bhandare inaugurated the three-day festival, which is organized by the J D Centre of Art (JDCA). Sources said 10 movies were screened on the first day. The inaugural session commenced with the screening of a six-minute Odia film, "Anvesan", based on a short story by famous novelist late Fakir Mohan Senapati. The film was directed by Monica Das. The movie revolved around Rebati, a minor girl and her desire for education in a conservative society.

Another short film - "Man, Tiger, Spirit" - by Tara Douglas too received accolades from film buffs. The film showed how nature, animals and humans are closely related to each other for sustenance.

"It is heartening to see JDCA organizing the event for the last six years. It is a good platform for artists and filmmakers to hone their skills," the governor said.

This year's theme is "Celebrating and reminiscing masters". Films on eminent personalities such as M F Hussain, Biren De, Jahangir Sabawala, musician Asad Ali Khan and works of filmmakers Mani Kaul and Bhagwan Garga are to be screened during the festival.

There will be approximately 27 hours of film screening throughout the three days. Nearly forty eminent delegates are expected to attend the film fiesta.

"We are encouraging young, budding and amateur filmmakers to exhibit their talents at the festival. It has its complement of exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops and dance and music recitals," JDCA chairman Jatin Das said.

On the occasion, JDCA released a poster poem by noted poet Jayant Mahapatra. "This is the first time a poster poem is being released in the country. We will encourage poets about poster poems in the state and outside," Das said.

There will be poetry reading sessions by eminent Odia poets on January 12. Around 20 exhibition stalls have been erected at the festival venue to display traditional handicrafts, handlooms, publications and objects of art.
