A Bellshill based film school are celebrating after scooping a top national award.
LensHeads film school has been awarded the Discovery Youth Film Award for their love triangle flick “The Other Guy”.
The film school, which has been helping aspiring Spielberg’s for around five years from its base at the learning centre in Bellshill Academy, landed the award based on the overall quality of the final film.
The Other Guy follows a complex tale of love and desire between three school pupils – with an unexpected twist in store for the audience.
Willie Davidson, head of the learning centre said he was delighted with the success of the film.
He said: “Like all of our films, we are all really proud of how well The Other Guy has done.
“At LensHeads, we do our best to encourage anyone with an interest in film to take it forward and see where they can take it.
“Everyone here is passionate about film and it is infectious so we are really happy to be recognised.”
The local school, young people are given the chance to learn the skills and filming techniques to make their own silver screen creations.
Students are encouraged to find what area of filmmaking best suits them, from scriptwriting to directing while others are encouraged to get in front of the camera and act.
But unlike, other youth focused film programmes, Willie explained that LensHeads rarely say “No” to an idea and instead find ways of making it work.
He explained: “When the idea for the film ‘Backfire’ was first discussed, we realised that it wouldn’t be easy to film a movie that had a gun at the centre of it. But we contacted the community policing team at Bellshill and they were a fantastic help.
“They assigned us two officers who were on set anytime we were using our replica gun and that really helped the process because our gun looked so real.
“That is a great example of how we make something work at LensHeads and that has really gave our students the encouragement to try their most adventurous ideas.”
While understandably pleased about their latest award, LensHeads are no strangers to high praise.
The group has won countless industry awards, including one from the Seoul Film Festival in Korea, alongside receiving rave reviews at this year’s local Deep Fried Film Festival.
But Willie revealed he has some simple aspirations for the group’s future.
He added: “My hope is that Lenshead is still here for future generations of young filmmakers.
“Like a lot of groups at the moment, we are always on the lookout for funding and this has got harder and harder to come by.
“But I think we have shown the great potential we have in our local area and I think we have the talent to keep making great films for the foreseeable future.”
