Each role that Manoj Bajpai chooses, he does with caution. "I can't repeat myself in movies," he says, adding, "If you see my work, you will notice that I avoid repeating a character of mine, even though it was appreciated.
Whether it's Bhiku Mhatre in Satya, Maharaja Vijendra Singh in Zubeida, Rashid in Pinjar or Virendra Pratap in Rajneeti, I try and take up a challenging role in any film that I do. If I see that I am being offered similar kinds of roles, I just reject them outright!"
As the actor speaks about the kind of scripts that excite him, he says, "Often I read a great story, but it's not backed by good director or producer. At such times I wish I could direct it. In fact, now I am seriously considering directing a film. It's the most natural progression for an actor I think.
Even while acting I often give my inputs to a director, sit for the story sessions and I find the exercise invigorating. So, yes directing a film is on my agenda!" And will he prefer writing the script too for his film? he thinks and says, "According to me writing's a lonely job and as an actor I cannot live with that kind of solitude. Na, I don't think I'll ever write. Yes I will give my inputs to the script, try and add value etc, but writing the whole script...nah!"
