INSPIRED by their classmates and the media, a group of Hackham East Primary students has made an award-winning documentary on the subject of immigration.

The film, A Special Report, questions the way that immigration is portrayed in the media and explores the themes of multiculturalism and migration.

Ashton Watson, 13, was among the filmmakers who travelled to Sydney in October to receive the Kids Witness News award.

“Immigration is in the news all the time,” he said.

“We wanted to put it out there that there are two sides of the story.”

Jack McMillan, 13, said the Year 7 team of filmmakers drew inspiration from the diversity of students at school.

“There are a lot of multicultural people here and we like that,” he said.

“They (boat people) are treated like animals when they are taken to Indonesian prisons and it’s wrong ... They are still human.”

During the five minute film, the students also interviewed a parent from the school about her migration to Australia from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Teacher Jarrod Lamshed said there had been a focus on digital and online media at the school in recent years.

The school received cameras and editing equipment, valued at $2000.
