Orchard Vale Community School was presented with the Devon Inclusion Award – Dyslexia by David Blower, a Devon County Council school improvement officer, at a school assembly.
It is one of only ten schools in the county to receive this award at the enhanced level, the highest achievement. This means that its practices and learning support are exemplary.
External assessors judged its performance through observing lessons, talking to children and staff and through a comprehensive portfolio of work. It was noted that the school's particular strengths were creativity, inclusivity, good teaching and homework that is fun for parents and children.
A film crew spent a day at the school last week as its excellent practice has been recognised nationally. Lessons and interviews with pupils and staff were filmed for online material and resources to support teachers by the government's Training and Development Agency.
Head teacher Jan Baker said: "We are delighted and proud that the outstanding practice of our staff has been recognised in this area of expertise. We are passionate that every child is fully included in school life and supported to achieve their very best academically and socially and can feel confident of their worth, whatever they choose to do in life."
